Into the MLB Vault: Frank Robinson

Frank Robinson: 1999 SP Signature Edition Autograph

Frank Robinson

It has been a while since I have added a card from the 1999 SP Signature Edition Autograph set, but this beauty came in today for Frank Robinson, Hall of Fame class of 1982. Robinson was a 14-time All-Star selection, 8 of which came as a member of the National League (Cincinnati Reds) and 6 as a member of the American League (5 with the Baltimore Orioles and 1 with the Angels). I was born well after he retired from the sport but of course, was able to see him manage an Expos team that was transitioning from Montreal to Puerto Rico to Washington, D.C. where they eventually became the Washington Nationals. It’s a shame the Nationals’ Front Office didn’t renew Robinson’s contract; it would have been interesting to see how he would have done as a manager with a roster that includes Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg, Ryan Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche. Another “what if.”
